You are on this page so I understand you have decided to become a civil servant. So don't worry, you are on the right page. Your basic should be very strong. A strong foundation is the secret story of success. So I strongly recommend you to go through all the basic sources first. Try to read more and more from your initial days of preparation. It will increase the spread of your knowledge. The entire process of the examination is a lengthy process. It will take few years of your life. So a strong faith in yourself is the initial requirement of this examination. Always ask yourself whether you want to become an officer or not. Understanding yourself is the chief element of foundation building. Here I remember the famous line of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore(The first Asian to get a Nobel prize in literature):

Reading different kinds of stuff and inculcating them is a badly requirement. The internalization will really help us in the different stages of this examination. Continuous reading and internalizing the content is the pulse of this examination. From my experience, I have experienced some of the points required for this examination.
1.A voracious reading habit.
2. A strong intent to become an officer.
3.Pleasure to know the current happenings around you at the national and international level.
4.A great degree of internalization of the content you are reading.
5.A great faith in yourself.
6. The quality of writing in a nice way.
7.A higher degree of inclination towards literature and science because literature advocates human emotion and science represents the empirical quantification of reality. A good officer needs both.8.A great positive concern towards social issues and a repository of solutions for them.
9.An easy and tangible way of explaining things to others which reflects the simplicity of your understanding of the complex social equations.
10.Ahigh degree of aspiration to get success. The aspirants should be like a postcard to be stuck with the process until it has reached the destination.
11. A great degree of resilience to handle the failures and continuous failures.
12.You should have a balanced personality to deal with extreme situations in life.
13. Try to minimize the distractions in life as far as possible.
14.Dont fall in love during preparation of this exam as it will ruin your life though in rare cases there are some exceptions to it.
Before coming to this process of examination, you should judge yourself on the above points I have mentioned. Be loyal to yourself and make sure that you really want to become an officer. Once you decided, don't look back. Go ahead with full intent and intensity. Trust me , success will be yours in the end.
